Local Bookshops

Scarthin Books

The Promenade, Cromford, Matlock DE4 3QF, UK – 01629 823272

It is difficult to convey just how wonderful, how special, Scarthin Books is. To call it simply a bookshop is to do it a grave injustice ... most certainly, it is that, but it is very much more than that. Of course, the books are a delight, and so very many! Yes, it has a superb restaurant/cafe, but that is simply a splendid adjunct to the books. One can sit and eat outside in the garden, almost secluded by trees, and on a sunny day, it's a delight. The location is so lovely, overlooking the mill pond below. But all of these things are only a part of it. The atmosphere in the place is heady; it is quite simply beautiful beyond compare. It's a wonderful, dreamy place to be. Go there. Eat, read and buy some books. And afterward, plan your next visit. As soon as you possibly can.

One of my favourite places in all the world... A second hand bookshop to get lost in! The cafe is vegetarian, the food is awesome ( even though I am a confirmed omnivore) and the shelves are floor to sealing over three storeys... Three storeys... with many stories... Awesome specialist sections and great staff. And all this in the middle of a beautiful village that is itself a UN world heritage site. If you haven't been go, and if you have I'll not need to suggest you return because any book lover will feel much as I do!
